Danny Newmahr was one of the most honest men I have ever met in almost 76 years.
We met in the mid ‘70s when we both worked for the Shopwell Supermarket chain in NY. Our friendship continued when we joined Gristedes Supermarkets in the early ‘80s. During the 1980 ten-day transit strike Danny walked to and from Queens to Broadway and 110th Street in NYC so as not to miss work. This, after a full morning of delivering newspapers.
To further illustrate the kind of guy Danny was, during the Christmas holiday of 1982, when my wife, Lucy, was hospitalized and recovering from surgery, Danny drove over 150 miles, dressed as Santa Claus so that he could spend half an hour with our two toddlers. They were overjoyed and his visit was the highlight of our Christmas that year.
Danny was the poster boy for diversity. It didn’t matter where you came from, your complexion or what you looked like. If you could do a good days work you were his friend. If you couldn’t, you weren’t.
Annie, We are so sorry for your loss. I take comfort in knowing that Danny’s love for you is ongoing and never ending; and, that I was the guy who got you together. He will never be forgotten by me, or my family.
Safe journey, my friend.
